More Than Just a Headshot
Lately, I've found myself photographing more professional headshots & corporate shoots, and honestly, it's become one of my favourite types of shoots.
Most of these sessions involve me travelling directly to a client's office, setting up a simple mobile studio, and working my way through the team one person at a time. On paper, it sounds straightforward. But what I enjoy most isn't actually the photography itself; it's the people.
As a photographer, you naturally become an observer.
Every workplace has its own personality.
One of the unexpected joys of corporate headshot photography is getting a glimpse into different industries and team cultures. No two offices feel the same. Some are energetic and fast-paced, while others are calm and collaborative. It's fascinating seeing how people interact with each other when they're comfortable in their environment.
Being self-employed and often working solo, I also genuinely enjoy being around teams.
Photography can sometimes be a surprisingly independent profession. Many days are spent editing, planning shoots, replying to emails, or working behind a camera. Walking into an office filled with people chatting, collaborating, and sharing ideas is a refreshing change of pace.
There's something nice about becoming part of a team's day, even if only for a few hours.
Of course, there is also the challenge of making people feel comfortable in front of the camera. Most professionals aren't models, and many arrive saying, "I'm awkward in photos" or "I don't know what to do with my hands."
The good news is that they don't need to.
My goal is never to create stiff corporate portraits. Instead, I focus on helping people feel relaxed, approachable, and confident. The best headshots happen when someone stops thinking about the camera and simply allows their personality to come through.
A great headshot isn't just about looking professional. It's about looking like yourself on your best day.
As I continue photographing more teams across Melbourne, I'm reminded that every business is ultimately made up of people. Behind every website, LinkedIn profile, and company logo is a group of individuals working together towards a common goal.
And getting to meet those people, even briefly, is what makes these shoots so enjoyable.
