A Quiet Escape to Alowyn Gardens (Day 3)

Finding Creativity in the Yarra Valley

After filming an event in the Yarra Valley, I unexpectedly discovered one of Victoria's most peaceful gardens and a reminder that sometimes the best ideas arrive when we finally slow down.

As a photographer, videographer and Creative Director, my brain is rarely switched off.

Even when a project finishes, I'm usually thinking about the next client, planning future shoots, replying to emails, or brainstorming ways to grow my business.

So after spending two incredible days filming Amplify HER in the Yarra Valley, I wasn't expecting my favourite part of the trip to happen once the cameras were packed away.

Checking Out of Balgownie Estate

My final filming session wasn't until later that afternoon, between 3pm and 5pm, so after checking out of the beautiful Balgownie Estate Yarra Valley, I suddenly found myself with something I hadn't experienced in quite some time...

An entire day with absolutely nothing planned.

First of all, a little shout-out to Balgownie Estate.

The staff were incredibly welcoming, the accommodation was comfortable, and it ended up being the perfect place to unwind after long days of filming. Having my own room gave me the chance to recharge, create content for my own business, and enjoy a little quiet before heading back into work mode.

Then came the question...

"What do I actually do with five hours to myself?"

Discovering Alowyn Gardens

After a quick search, I found Alowyn Gardens, located just five minutes from Balgownie Estate.

Known for its beautifully designed themed gardens, seasonal flowers, and peaceful walking paths, it felt like the perfect place to spend a slow afternoon in the Yarra Valley.

I ordered myself a proper lunch.

Put my camera over my shoulder.

And simply started wandering.

Learning to Slow Down

At first...

I wasn't really present.

Although I was surrounded by beautiful gardens, my attention kept drifting back to my phone.

Notifications.

Emails.

Messages.

To-do lists.

My body had arrived, but my mind was still carrying the weight of work.

For a while, I found myself caught between two worlds—physically walking through peaceful gardens while mentally replaying conversations, deadlines, and ideas.

But nature has a funny way of asking nothing from you.

It doesn't compete for your attention.

It simply waits.

Little by little, I stopped reaching for my phone.

The constant noise in my head softened.

Time didn't seem to move any slower, but somehow it became fuller.

The afternoon unfolded gently, like pages turning one by one instead of all at once.

The breeze carried the scent of flowers through the gardens.

Leaves danced quietly overhead.

Sunlight filtered through branches, creating patterns that shifted with every passing cloud.

The world hadn't changed.

I had.

And once my mind became still, I started seeing everything again.

Not just looking.

Observing.

Seeing the World Through a Different Lens

The first two days of the retreat had been filled with inspiration.

Conversations about business.

Ideas for Social Sync AU.

Future collaborations.

Creative plans.

Those days expanded my thinking.

This afternoon grounded it.

Walking through Alowyn Gardens reminded me that creativity isn't always something we force.

Sometimes it quietly returns the moment we stop chasing it.

Instead of photographing wide landscapes, I became fascinated by the details.

The elegant curve of a flower stem.

The delicate structure hidden beneath each bloom.

The contrast between light and shadow.

Rather than documenting the gardens themselves, I wanted to experiment with perspective.

I deliberately used a narrower aperture and lower ISO, allowing the bright background to fall away while creating darker, almost silhouetted studies of flowers and plants.

The result felt less like botanical photography and more like abstract sculptures created by nature.

It's amazing how changing your perspective, even slightly, can completely transform what you see.

The Most Productive Thing I Did Was Nothing

For a long time, I measured productivity by output.

How many reels I edited.

How many emails I replied to.

How many projects I completed.

But sitting quietly in a garden taught me something different.

Sometimes productivity looks like slowing down.

Sometimes the best business ideas arrive when you're not trying to have them.

Sometimes your creativity simply needs room to breathe.

Those few peaceful hours wandering through Alowyn Gardens gave me more clarity than another afternoon behind my computer ever could.

It reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

Not because it lets me capture beautiful places.

But because it teaches me to notice them.

Through My Lens

Here are a few of my favourite images from Alowyn Gardens.

Rather than photographing the gardens as a whole, I challenged myself to focus on shape, texture, contrast and light.

Each image became an experiment in slowing down.

A reminder that beauty often exists in the details we usually walk straight past.

Sometimes all it takes is changing the way we look.

Explore Beyond The Postcards

One of the greatest lessons travel has taught me is that you don't always need to fly across the world to discover something meaningful.

Sometimes adventure is hidden in your own backyard.

Whether it's wandering through a garden in the Yarra Valley, discovering a quiet café in Melbourne, or exploring another country altogether, every place has a story waiting to be noticed.

Beyond The Postcards is my collection of travel stories, photography, and reflections from Australia and around the world, sharing the places, people, and perspectives that continue to shape the way I create.
